The Weather Channel App - MudSponge filmed at Devils Head Resort

The Weather Channel

Three commercials and web banner ads for The Weather Channel App.

We created a series of comedic videos and animated web banners to promote downloads of The Weather Channel app. The first two videos, designed for national TV spots, were so successful a third commercial was created and advertised during the US Open Of Golf. Each video was also cut into socially shareable snippets for Facebook and Snapchat. The banners paired with each of the videos as a takeover for the sports section of cbssports.com.

Deliverables
Broadcast Videos

Three videos were made for TV.

Social Videos

Broadcast videos were edited into shareable snippets for Facebook and Snapchat.

Animated Web Banners

Assets and the overall theme for the campaign were shared in a promotional web banner campaign.

Strategy

The Weather Channel partnered with Flipeleven in the creation of some national TV spots. They had minimal direction. They wanted to leverage the reviews of their app in a commercial. We dig into the usernames of the submitted reviews and personify what they may have been doing when they were using the app. A series of outrageous stories were attached to some of the more unique usernames playfully to capture how these users use the app.

Broadcast Videos

The videos were cut into 30-second spots that played on broadcast television. The Mudslide video was a literal take on the username Mudsponge88. Car-becue was another playful take on the username OG_Grillaz. These two videos were the principals.

Social Videos

Unique versions of social videos were sized and edited to play within Facebook and Snapchat. For Facebook, the commercials were cut with captions playing so users could read what was happening while it played silently on their timeline. Snapchat advertisements were unique because they were shown in 7-second snippets. These were edited into a whole 21-second spot cut into 7-second pieces. Users would see these sponsored ads in 7-second bits to view the entire video.

Animated Web Banners

The web banners used creative resources from the videos as part of the graphics. These banners were then coded and animated using a combination of HTML5 and JavaScript.
